Bio

Leah Chappell was born in Spokane, Washington, in 1979. When she was 8, the family returned to California to stay, settling in Oakland. Leah’s artistic talent and political awareness were nurtured and guided by her mom and her sisters, all of whom are artists and musicians as well. Her extended family, which is extremely multicultural, provided a rich background from which she was able to draw inspiration. The cultural and political heritage of Oakland, as personified by the Black Panther Party and Tony Toni Tone has also been a powerful influence in Leah’s artistic life. Leah’s younger brother (who is also an artist and musician), introduced her to the music of Bob Marley several years ago. The lyrics, the music and their spiritual power changed her life.  His level of consciousness affected her deeply, and she began to express how the music impacted her in portraits of Bob.  She continues to paint and draw those who she has found to be instrumental in her growth as an artist and a person, including Marvin Gaye, The Buddha and members of her family.
